A SINGLE meranti tree (Shorea) languished in the middle of a potato filed stretching along the hillside leading to Lake Belibis in Giri Mulyo village, Kerinci Regency, Jambi. The nearly dead, 10-meter tall and 50-centimeter wide tree stand witness to the forest encroachment in Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS). It is surrounded by scorched tree stumps whose diameter is comparable to the height of a person, which were burned down by encroachers
