Ignoring Warnings in Lembah Anai

The area affected by ‘cold lava’ (a mixture of volcanic material and rocks that flow down a volcano’s slopes in the rain) floods in Limo Kaum, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, May 12. Based on preliminary data from the West Sumatra Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency on May 18, the total number of casualties due to flash floods and landslides in five regions in the province has reached 61 people, including five people who have not been identified, while 14 more people are still missing. LARGE boulders from the summit of Mount Marapi rolled down almost simultaneously as far as seven kilometers into the Lembah Anai (Anai Valley). The volcanic materials from the eruption were carried by flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rain throughout Saturday night, May 11. The ‘cold lava’ then hit the villages on the slopes of the mountain, including Bukik Batabuah in Candung subdistrict, Agam Regency, West Sumatra.
