Indigenous people and villagers in Central Halmahera are facing clean water crisis. Community wells and river water are contaminated by nickel mining.

FOUR water jugs belonging to Sumirah were neatly lined up on the porch of her house in Lelilef Sawai village, Weda Tengah subdistrict, Central Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. The 54-year-old woman was sitting waiting for the water delivery truck that comes twice a week. This has been her routine over the last seven years due to the clean water crisis caused by the contamination of wells with mud from nickel mining waste.
