THE messengers at the final press conferences tried to show some optimism. Much has been achieved was a common refrain. But as two weeks of discussions on sustainable development abruptly ended late Friday evening, with delegates suspending formal negotiations, the thorniest issues remain unresolved and countries seem no closer to reaching a consensus than they did a week ago.
