The Environment Minister has ordered a halt to the North Jakarta coastal reclamation project. The Jakarta administration, however, has resolved to proceed, regardless.

SIX years ago, the East Ancol coast was abuzz with activity, night and day. Dozens of trucks plied back and forth, dumping soil, pebbles and sand along the coast. Little by little, the coastline expanded. A new land area measuring some 33 hectares came into being.
