THE barber at the Taman Permata Buana Housing Estate in West Jakarta shuddered when he massaged his customer’s shoulders for relaxation—a normal procedure after a haircut. Tohari’s skin was inflexible, almost hard as a rock, unlike any customer the barber had ever met. The hairdresser decided to call it quits.
