I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung, the leader of Puputan, was a man of letters. He wrote many hymns, including the one translated in commemoration of the Puputan centennial.

A SONG was an omen. Before going to the battleground, when death was looming, he wrote down his principles.
And, when the first volley of shots knocked him down, the Dutch troops did not know he was a great writer, an author who viewed literary writing as a means of self-purification which kept him in constant touch with the Supreme Being.
