HARISANTO was still a child when Pasar Johar in Semarang was built in the 1930s. But the 75-year-old man still has fond memories of the place. Mohammad, Harisanto’s father, was an employee of the Public Works Office in Semarang. He had the highest position possible for an indigenous person—the number one position was held by a Dutchman. The father used to bring little Harisanto and his other children to the construction project of Pasar Johar
