MOUNT Gamkonora in Halmahera, North Maluku, has been spewing hot lava since Tuesday last week. The 1,635-meter-high mountain has also spewed thick smoke and ash to a height of 4,000 meters from its crater. Gamkonora is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. This volcano is recorded to have erupted 12 times, the latest in 1987. The eruption normally takes the form of small and moderate explosions, not searing clouds as with Mt Merapi in Java. G
