Transtoto Handhadari, CEO of Indonesian Forest Company Perhutani, says the only way to stop further deforestation in Java is to deal firmly with illegal loggers and the people who finance them. According to Handhadari, 500,00 hectares of forest were lost in Java from 1998 to 2001 alone. “But the figure fell after law enforcement agencies acted firmly. Today much of the denuded land has been reforested,” Handhadari proudly said.
