THE National Monument: an obelisk atop a phallic pillar standing erect within a yonic circle at its base. The monument was built to immortalize the Indonesian people’s struggle against colonialism. Standing 137 meters tall, it is made of marble, with a “flaming torch” as its peak. The flame has a diameter of 6 meters, and is made from 35 kilograms of bronze, coated with 35 kilograms of gold. Construction of the building began in August 1959
