Rebuilding Nias

The Nias Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Agency (BRR-Nias), in charge of rebuilding the island after the quake and tsunami in 2004, is to complete its mission in 2009. Last week Tempo visited Nias to see what BRR has done since it began work on the island three years ago.

THE main road along the eastern coast of Nias has now been re-asphalted. Repair work began from the district capital at Gunung Sitoli to Tuhemberua on the eastern end facing the Island of Sumatra. Infrastructure development picked up after the tsunami, including expansion of the island’s roads, bridges, harbor and airport.
