Sentry Duty in the Indian Ocean

FRIDAY two weeks ago was a special day. The ship Baruna Jaya III weighed anchor from the Dermaga 200 wharf at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta, heading out into the Indian Ocean along the west cost of Padang, West Sumatra. The ship’s stern was packed with valuable equipment from the United States in the form of tsunami early-warning detectors and other important instruments to research the relationship between the ocean and the atmosphere.
