Down Sarawak’s Old Streets

Many streets in Sarawak are located in what used to be Javanese kampung. A Javanese prince was said to have married a Malay princess to give birth to a datu, a Borneo man of noble birth.

IF you come to Sarawak, go to Jalan Gambir and Jalan Pasar, two of the oldest streets in the eastern Malaysian state. Today the streets are a hive of activity: busy commercial districts, parks, and squares where young people meet, families picnic, and tourists visiting as they favor the beautiful sight of Sungai Sarawak and, across the pristine river, the grand residence of the raja (king) now occupied by the Governor of Sarawak.
