Part of the stolen gold artifacts are golden tools or receptacles used as medium for prayer. That sacred function is possibly what attracts antique dealers to the receptacles in the museum.

The golden receptacle stolen from the National Museum in early September was first unearthed on the slopes of Mount Penanggungan, East Java. The Old Javanese manuscript Tantu Pagelaran, which describes the origins of Java, tells how the gods cut off a piece of India's Mount Semeru, the center of all universes, with which to nail it down.
