In late August the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa rescued 433 men, women and children from a sinking boat off Christmas Island. When the Howard government refused to allow the ship to enter Australian waters, it was condemned around the world. At home, however, most people cheered the Prime Ministers uncompromising stand.
