Historian Peter Spillet recounts his experiences retracing the voyage of the Macassan sailors in a padewakang to Arnhem Land.

ON display at one corner of the museum the padekawang is a picture of strength and simplicity. Unpainted, the ship’s sides still clearly bear the veins and fibers of the kyo ba’do (iron wood) of which the vessel is made. No engine, no iron nails.
