The Eastern Flood Canal Feeding Frenzy

THE acquisition of land for the Eastern Flood Canal costing some Rp2.4 trillion is turning into a feeding frenzy. The funds are being embezzled in all sorts of ways, from manipulating land certificates to upgrading property values. The prosecutors’ offices and the police have only just begun dealing with a few of the many cases. The following is a Tempo report on the manipulation of funds for the canal project that spans some 23 kilometers.

HAJI Pelor is still smarting, not because he was hit by a bullet, but by the Eastern Flood Canal (BKT) project. Because of the Jakarta flood control project, he has had to return again and again for questioning by the East Jakarta District Prosecutor. The 70-year-old man is being questioned in relation to a case involving the manipulation of land set aside for social and public facilities owned by PT Mas Naga at the Pondok Kopi area of East Jakar
