Indonesian women are working in Japan as nightclub hostesses in increasing numbers. But their lives are certainly no bed of Tokyo roses.

Jakarta, the pub, is located at a center for nightlife in Chiba, a small town east of Tokyo. The well-patronized venue, high on a fifth floor, is flanked by massage parlors, restaurants, bars and karaoke houses. But this place offers something different: 15 pictures of Indonesian women are posted on a wall by the entrance. They are the female entertainers, popularly known as "hostesses".
