'Flying Documents' & Illegal Logging

Transported across the vastness of Indonesia’s territorial waters, trapped with false documents to accompany this very valuable commodity, a number of Indonesian-flagged foreign ships were caught recently by the navy and police. One of them was the MV Mirna Rijeka, a Croatian ship, captured in August 2004. A legal case continues: after losing a pretrial against the navy, representatives of the Mirna Rijeka appealed to the Appellate Court of Surabaya. Tempo assigned an investigation team to trace the circumstances related to the false documents as well as the power struggle among the authorities to investigate cases related to confiscated logs which are worth billions of rupiah.
