Sad news recently came out of Singapore: a number of Indonesian maids had committed suicide, allegedly due to pressure from their employers. How could this happen in a country where its people are known to be disciplined and law-abiding? TEMPO asked officials at the Singapore Ministry of Manpower to comment on this problem and the following was their response:
