THE liberal attitude of Muslim scholar, Professor Dawam Rahardjo, 64, upset Muhammadiyah Chairman, Din Syamsuddin. So Dawam, appointed to sit on the Muhammadiyah Executive Board by its past chairmen Amien Rais and Ahmad Syafii Maarif, is today no longer recognized as a member of Muhammadiyah. According to Din, Dawam was indirectly expelled, meaning Dawam had resigned before he was expelled. But Dawam denied this.
