JAKARTA today is full of banners, posters and billboards presenting pictures and messages of the current gubernatorial candidates. There are parades on the streets, carnivals in the neighborhoods and of course, dangdut concerts everywhere. It is campaign time, and Jakarta is manifesting its sense of democracy—direct elections to vote for the city’s governor and deputy governor, no longer through representatives.
