The image of the police force in the eyes of the public is far from satisfactory. A number of cases, the most recent being the fat bank accounts of senior police officers, and charges of some police taking bribes from corruption suspects, have done very little to lift this negative image.

A SURVEY by the Indonesian Human Rights Monitor last week, concluded that most Jakarta residents are totally dissatisfied with the service provided by the police. The only achievement recognized by the public is in the area of antiterrorism. In people’s minds, police reforms have not even started.
