YAQUT Cholil Qoumas already had his work cut out for him when he became the religious affairs minister on December 22, 2020. He inherited a slew of issues, from stalled umrah (minor pilgrimage) and haj pilgrimages due to the Covid-19 pandemic to the religious moderation campaign. He admitted even among the ministry’s employees there are some unmoderated believers.
