Sophan Sophiaan: "I may be a fatalist"

With his dark complexion and neat mustache, Sophan looked vibrant, his hearty laughter bursting out now and again. He was recounting the amusing experience of singing together with his wife Widyawati at a wedding reception they had just attended.

His withdrawal as faction chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), seemed to be the reason for his gaiety. Sophan tendered his resignation on Thursday, January 24, 2002.
