A variety of signs read 'Land for Sale' along the road to Kuta Beach on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Some signs are simple plywood and nailed to bamboo poles. Others blare their message from four-meter-high billboards.
The people who put up these signs are targeting foreign buyers. According to Saiful, a resident of Kuta village, 'international' transactions are being conducted in the area. "Most of the land, especially near the beach, belong to foreigners," said Saiful, 35.
