A twentysomething American who identified himself as Paul Randall met Tempo in the lobby of the Hotel Airlangga in Mataram in October. He had come to Lombok to inquire about buying land on the island.
After doing some research online, Randall had made contact with a local broker called Ira Property. Its proprieter, an Indonesian named Ismail Salim, had offered him several plots of land near Pink Beach in East Lombok regency. The beach is widely known for the hue its sand takes on in the afternoon light.
