About five meters long, the nameless, aging speedboat appeared suddenly. The boat's only seat was for the driver, Kahar. Passengers, four women and seven men, were packed into the space behind the driver, piled in along with their belongings.
On the first Wednesday of last December, Tempo tagged along a group of Indonesians wanting to cross the border to Tawau in Malaysia in search of work. Using this small speed boat, the group headed out just before noon from Lalosalo pier on Sebatik island, Nunukan district, North Kalimantan.
