Without the Syahril Sabirin case, there might never have been any amendment of the Bank Indonesia law. The BI governor refused to resign in circumstances which would have been untenable for such an important official in most countries. Despite his arrest and now trial, Law No. 23 of 1999 provides virtually no way to get him out of his post if he does not want to go. And he does not.
