A number of Sidoarjo residents victimized by Lapindo’s mudflow claim to have been subjected to extortion by a village head and Sidoarjo Mud Control Agency personnel. They offered services with compensation worth 30 percent of the land price.

THE house yard of Mudiharto is now covered with weeds. The rain falling since morning hours in Besuki village, Jabon district, Sidoarjo, East Java, on Tuesday last week had drenched the area around the house. The previously fertile land appeared to have been improperly maintained.
