UMAR Patek is a man of many faces. He, among other names, is known as Small Umar, Pak Taek, and Zacky. When in Afghanistan in 1991, as member of the first group to attend Jemaah Islamiyah cadre training, his name was changed to Abu Syeikh. Patek and his group went to Afghanistan along with another unit from Malaysia, upon recommendation by Abdullah Sungkar, leader of the Southeast Asia Jemaah Islamiyah, who died in 1999.
