Illegal mines in East Kalimantan have flourished over the past two years. Funds flowed to some high-ranking police personnel.
GAPING holes left behind by illegal mining activity is now part of the view around Bukit Menangis in Santan Ulu village, Marangkayu subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan. One hill looks dug out. Mounds of coal nearly two meters high can be seen on open land by the roadside at Kilometer 25 of Jalan Raya Samarinda-Bontang, not far from the excavation work.
