A number of legal cases occurred at unlicensed Islamic boarding schools. They escaped supervision by the Ministry of Religious Affairs because they were not registered.

Problems continue to arise at a number of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The cases are generally related to abuse and sexual violence. A number of incidents have occurred in unlicensed Islamic boarding schools. However, such problems occur at licensed Islamic boarding schools as well. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has no oversight over unlicensed schools.
