Endeavors to clean up the Supreme Court are both difficult and rare. Proof of this, all 72 of the candidate justices recommended by the Supreme Court secretary-general to the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) comprise professional career judges. These 72 candidates have been recommended to fill 22 openings. Twenty-two of the current 51 justices are scheduled to retire soon. Another, Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, was tragically murdered.
