Two couples, in Surabaya and Bandung have been denied a marriage certificate, because they were not married according to the rites of an officially-recognized religion in Indonesia.

Bad luck seemed to continue dogging Charles Tee and his wife Suryawati Soetopo. Since their marriage in 1996 the couple, now already with two children, is yet to be issued a marriage certificate. Two weeks ago, their efforts to gain legal recognition with the state administrative court came to naught. Now they await the decision of the appeals court, to which they have brought their case.
