THE story of Pinocchio begins in Florence, Italy, where Carlo Lorenzini (1826-1890) was born. In 1881, Lorenzini wrote the story of Pinocchio under the pen name Carlo Collodi. His opening paragraph compares the king to a piece of wood. Perhaps satire and political criticism aimed at the monarchy.
