IN late October 1964, I was able to realize the dream I had from the time I was a teenager to study at the Sorbonne, Paris. I went to Western Europe with my wife, Sri Soelastri, and only child, Sri Sulaksmi Damayanti, who was just 14 months old at the time. I was given the opportunity to study economics at Universite Pluridisiplinaire de Paris I, Pantheon-Sorbonne, with a scholarship from the Ford Foundation and an agreement with the government.
