Allegations that Laskar Jihad militia leader Jafar Umar Thalib is behind the recent spate of violence in Ambon would have to be proven in court. The police are also expected to trace down the real provocateurs.

Alex Manuputty, the leader of the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) now shares different quarters with Jafar Umar Thalib in the same lockup at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta. Under heavy security escort, Alex, who has allegedly been fanning separatist sentiments through the movement for the independence of the Republic of South Maluku (RMS) was flown to Jakarta from Ambon last Thursday. He is the icon of the Christians or the red group.
