OPINIONS across the country on the Bali meeting varied. Some held demonstrations to rebuff Bush. While some kiai (Muslim leaders) refused the invitation to attend the meeting, others did attend and lent their support. According to Hasyim Muzadi, head of Nahdlatul Ulama, who attended the hour-long dialog, US policy on the Middle East came under sharp attack from the Indonesian side. The US was deemed irresponsible in linking terrorism with Islam.
