The rhythms of Jali-Jali, a Betawi song, filled the Teater Besar at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Central Jakarta. Moments later, a female vocalist took up the tune. But that night, it was not a traditional gambang kromong (traditional orchestra of Betawi people) ensemble making music, but rather an orchestra from Kazakhstan.
