East Timor – Uncertainty for Post-Evacuees

Last Monday, assembled in the yard of the 161^st Wirasakti Military Command Headquarters in Kupang, approximately 50 soldiers stood upright for a flag raising ceremony. They are newcomers, formerly under the command of the 164^th Wiraharma Military Command in Dili. When East Timor declared independence in August 1999, they chose to join Indonesia.

However, three weeks ago, they staged a demonstration in the Military Command Headquarters yard.
