Deforestation and soil instability are turning the southern part of Central Java into a region highly prone to flooding and landslides.

Severe flooding has brought death and destruction to large areas of Central Java. Over the past two weeks, heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow and triggered landslides in Yogyakarta, Cilacap, Purworejo, Banyumas, Purbalingga and Gunung Kidul, leaving more than 100 people dead and thousands of hectares of farmland destroyed.
