A SMALL motorboat sped away from a dock in Merauke, Papua. Steered by Paulus Samkakai, the craft passed through the Arafuru Sea, then headed for the open ocean directly bordering Australian waters. After two days of being tossed about by the waves, the 38-year-old was stranded on Bamboo Island, south of Papua New Guinea, on Sunday night of last week.

Paulus also brought along his wife, Yogbet Mentanwa, and their four boysthe oldest is 20 years old
