In a bid to reform its corrupt judiciary, Indonesia has resorted to shifting its judges around the country. But judges transferred from the provinces to Jakarta may find their lifestyles not much better than kids at boarding schools.

It measures just six meters square and is pretty untidy. There is a rolled plastic mat in the corner beside some mosquito repellant. In front of the door, plastic sandals sit on a makeshift doormat. Towel, trousers and shirts hang on a piece of thread, crowding the space that serves as guestroom. Two other rooms, about the same size, function as bedroom and kitchen.
