THE cracking sounds from the upper part of the lift no longer catch Heru Setiono’s attention. Almost every day this 38-year-old man takes the lift from the parking level in the basement to the ground floor of Ratu Plaza, South Jakarta. “Perhaps the cable has worn out so it produces sounds and shakes,” Heru said. That afternoon in mid-November, he had just had his lunch close to the parking level when he took a lift to the ground floor.
