The idea for negotiations between the Thai government and Pattani guerillas arose two years ago. Jusuf Kalla became a mediator after receiving a written mandate. The experience in Aceh is being followed.

A BIRTHDAY present for King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej, on December 5, has been in the works in Bogor, West Java, for the past two years. It would be a special gift for the King, because—if it succeeds—it could mean the end the conflict which has led to a death toll of thousands in the county’s southern region. The present in question is a peace agreement between the government and Pattani guerilla fighters.
