THE fish trap had been floating in Ambalat waters, some 79 miles from Tarakan Beach, East Kalimantan, since a year ago. The stack of mangrove and coconut leaves tied to the seabed was built by Supardi, skipper of the Aldi Jaya fishing boat, and his three-man crew, to lure small fish, which would invite bigger ones as their potential catch.
