Kalpataru Award Revoked

THE Department for the Environment has revoked the Kalpataru award on the environmental saviors category from the ninik mamak—a group of traditional leaders in Nagari Enam Tanjung, Riau—last Wednesday. This is the first time a Kalpataru award—given for the first time in 1980—has ever been revoked. The ninik mamak are considered to have damaged the environment.
