THE cigarette smoke in the conference room was suffocating. The poster at the back reading “Consolidation Meeting and Security Coordination of the First Commemoration of Gus Dur’s Passing and the Third National Awakening Party Congress in Surabaya” looked like it was almost illegible in a fog. Nearly everybody of around 40 people attending the meeting in Hotel Tanjung’s conference room in Surabaya on Wednesday two weeks ago was smoking.
